Funny Or Die Is Bringing ARCHIE to Broadway (Yes, Really)

Come on along and listen to the lullaby of Broadway! The hip hooray and bally hoo of 42nd Street will now feature the comedic and musical stylings of the characters from Archie Comics. Yes, you read that correctly: Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle, and Jughead Jones will all be step-ball-changing Pas de Bourree-ing all along the Great White Way thanks to Funny Or Die’s Adam McKay.

If you, by now, don’t know Adam McKay by name, allow us to broaden your knowledge base: the man behind FoD has also been a longtime writer and executive producer on such epic greats as Step Brothers, the Anchorman movies, Talladega Nights, and created one of my all-time favorite Internet videos, The Landlord (I mean it’s a classic at this point, amirite?).

According to a press release, McKay will be teaming up with Archie Comics’ CEO Jon Goldwater and CCO Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa the Triptyk Studios (known for their shows An American in Paris, You’re Welcome America, and iconic camp classic Xanadu) project. Tara Smith, B. Swibel, and Adam Westbrook will oversee the whole shebang.

According to Goldberg, it was McKay’s comedic sensibilities that nabbed him the job—no doubt boding well for what to expect from the show’s combination of humor and cheesy-good-times musical moments. “We’ve always thought that Archie was destined to be a big Broadway star — and now that moment has come! I’ve long admired Adam’s work and the pairing of Archie’s world with his brilliant humor and sensibility is the perfect fit.”

Said McKay, “Archie represents a bygone era of America. And like all bygone eras, there are elements we miss and elements that should be bygone. This will be a musical that deals with both those realities in a bright, colorful and slightly demented way.” So what you’re saying is this will be like The Book of Mormon? One can ONLY HOPE, you guys.
