Fully Explorable Middle-Earth Modeled In Outerra Game Engine

Lord Of The Rings fans and PC gamers, prepare to be awestricken. A fully explorable, 1:1 scaled, 3D model of Middle-Earth has been developed within the Outerra game engine. Outerra developer cameni posted an in-depth update on a new version of the Middle-Earth world biomes alpha, making the world viewable to folks who download the proper dataset.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Outerra game engine, it’s primarily used to render high-quality 3D environments from up in space all the way down to the ground. These environments can be explored in full by fly-through, by vehicle or on foot. The ME-DEM project is focused upon the recreation of Middle-Earth within the Outerra game engine, and as of now, it is looking beyond impressive. Feast your eyes upon this glorious work of art.

Keep in mind, these environments are fully explorable from end to end, and you don’t have to worry about Saruman sending a troupe of Ugluk after you while marveling at the beautiful scenery. All you have to do is follow the developer’s instructions to experience this all first hand.

A couple of Reddit commenters actually discussed the possibility of exploring the Middle-Earth environment using the Oculus Rift and the Virtuix Omni. Imagine being able to actually walk from Shire to Mordor on your own two feet. Outerra does support the Oculus Rift, and I can only assume the Virtuix Omni will be soon to follow, so whenever it becomes available for retail, taking the journey on foot will be 100% possible. Tell me that doesn’t send a Frozen North chill down your spine.
