FROZEN Animator Will Direct Playmobil Movie

Everybody remembers LEGO. Everybody. Know why? Because it’s still as popular now as it has ever been, if not more popular. When it was announced a few years ago that a feature-length movie about it was coming out, we were all a bit skeptical, but it ended up being one of the best movies of that year. So it’s with this in mind that we’re reserving judgment about the upcoming Playmobil movie, especially after the news that Frozen‘s head of animation has signed on to direct.

Lino Di Salvo, who headed up the animation department for Disney‘s biggest animated hit, has signed on to direct Playmobil: Robbers, Thieves & Rebels, a film based on the German toy known for having round heads you can snap hats onto. Di Salvo’s impressive resume also includes being an animation supervisor on Disney films like Tangled and Bolt and has been the creative director at Paramount Animation since 2014.

In his statement about the announcement, Di Salvo mentioned being lucky to have honed his skills in the Disney system and to bring a beloved toy to the big screen. “I am thrilled at the prospect of developing the Playmobil film,” he said. “As a father and a filmmaker, to create a film about your son’s favorite toy, what else do you want?”

We’ll definitely wait to see how things turns out. Certainly, as Playmobil is geared towards younger kids, we’d imagine such a film would also skew to the under-10s without the all-ages appeal and nostalgia the The LEGO Movie had. We’ll have to wait until the end of 2018 to find out for sure.
