Next week, DC Comics is set to release Dark Knight III: The Master Race, which was reportedly the last chapter in Frank Miller’s Dark Knight saga. But apparently, the end of Dark Knight III is just the beginning for Miller.

“I thoroughly applaud what [Brian’s] doing. But now that he’s doing his, it’s now a four-part series,” said Miller during an interview with Newsarama. “I’m doing the fourth.”

Dark Knight III had been billed as a collaboration between Miller and writer Brian Azzarello, with artists Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson. But Miller’s comments in this interview seemed to indicate that he hadn’t written Dark Knight III at all.

“I’ll read what Brian’s doing, and I will respond to that,” related Miller. “I know what he’s doing and I applaud him completely, and I can’t wait to get started on my next book.”

In 1986, Miller wrote and drew the four-issue miniseries, The Dark Knight Returns, which took place in the near future with a 55-year old Batman coming out of retirement before ultimately facing Two-Face, The Joker, and even Superman in battle. It’s considered to be one of the best Batman stories of all time, and its influence is obvious on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In 2001, Miller returned to his story with the sequel, The Dark Knight Strikes Back, which was not as popular as the first story.

While speaking with ComicBook.com, Miller also revealed surprising plans for Carrie Kelly, the female Robin (and later Catgirl) that he introduced in The Dark Knight Returns.

“Well, to me, [Carrie Kelly] always has had the potential for longevity,” noted Miller. “I would love to do a series — in fact, I intend to do a series of her and her alone that would be very much like a comic book Nancy Drew series. It would be her detective stories. They would be smaller-sized, they would be designed to that they could be, even though they would be comic books, they would be comic books for children. That’s something I intend to do. Just picture a small figure of Robin on a cover holding a magnifying glass.”

DC has not yet confirmed Miller’s announcement of The Dark Knight IV, and it’s unclear if Miller would return as the artist or if he would hand off the art chores to someone else.
