Fox’s X-MEN TV Spinoff HELLFIRE Needs New Showrunners

Friday, Fox announced plans to order a pilot episode for the 24 spinoff, 24: Legacy. However, that order means that Fox’s previously revealed X-Men television spinoff, Hellfire, is going to need new showrunners. Evan Katz and Manny Coto co-wrote the initial Hellfire outline, but they have both left the project to focus on 24: Legacy.

Star Trek Beyond screenwriters Patrick McKay and JD Payne also co-wrote and co-created the Hellfire treatment. However, the new showrunner may also hire a new writer to handle the pilot episode of Hellfire. That means that the previous Hellfire outline could be discarded or reworked. Another consequence of the showrunner change is that Hellfire may not advance to the pilot stage until 2017.

Hellfire is very loosely based on the X-Men villains who call themselves the Hellfire Club. First introduced in the classic Dark Phoenix Saga, the Hellfire Club was a group of elite millionaires who wore decadent period clothing while attempting to dominate the X-Men and mutantkind. Several members of the Hellfire Club’s Inner Circle were mutants themselves, including Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost, both of whom were featured in the X-Men: First Class feature film.

For the television incarnation, Hellfire will reportedly keep X-Men: First Class‘ ’60s-era setting and follow “a young Special Agent who learns that a power-hungry woman with extraordinary abilities is working with a clandestine society of millionaires – known as “The Hellfire Club” – to take over the world.” But it’s possible that the new Hellfire showrunner and writers could make changes to that premise.
