Just a few weeks after co-creator Mark Millar teased Kingsman 2 on Nerdist News, Fox is officially moving forward with the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service and plans are coming together to begin production in April 2016. Thereâs just one major problem: Taron Egertonâs availability.
The first Kingsman was an unexpected hit when it came out earlier this year, and it propelled Egerton to greater stardom. Subsequently, Egerton was signed to play the title character in Robin Hood: Origins from Lionsgate. That film is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way as a potential franchise for Egerton. Robin Hood: Origins is set to shoot in February 2016, and it will probably not be finished by the time that Kingsman 2 begins production. This has caused a standoff between Fox and Lionsgate, and Fox is apparently not willing to change its plans at this time.
Because Fox already has Egerton signed for the Kingsman sequel, he is contractually obligated to do that film whenever Fox wants him to do it. However, there isnât a finished script for Kingsman 2 and a director is not currently in place; although Kingsman co-creator and director Matthew Vaughn may return for the sequel. Robin Hood: Origins is much further along in the process and the supporting roles are currently being cast.
Fox ran into a similar situation years ago when Jennifer Lawrence was caught between the dueling production schedules of X-Men: Days of Future Past and her YA franchise, The Hunger Games. However, the studios worked out a compromise for Lawrenceâs schedule and itâs likely that Egerton will eventually receive the same courtesy, even if it pushes back the start date of Kingsman 2.
