Spinoff material for Doctor Who is more abundant than Doctor Who itself, and one of the largest over time has been novels and novellas. Some of the new series’ best writers got their start in the franchise by writing novels during the interim years between 1989 and 2005. Usually, for every new series that airs, a new slate of branded literary adventures hit the stands so fans don’t have to wait between episodes to get their Time Lord fix. It hasn’t taken long for the Twelfth Doctor to get his own line of novels, and a different Doctor who’s only had one onscreen adventure thus far gets his own book as well, which should have fans WARnting more. (Is that a pun or just a hackneyed teaser? Perhaps both, maybe neither.)

The Twelfth Doctor, as portrayed on TV by Peter Capladi, doncha know, is the main character in Silhouette by Justin Richards, The Blood Cell by James Goss, and The Crawling Terror by Mike Tucker. Silhouette takes the Doctor, Vastra, Jenny, and Strax on a journey where no one is who they seem; The Blood Cell puts the Doctor in a maximum security asteroid prison, along with all the worst criminals in the universe; and The Crawling Terror is a cross-time mystery with the Doctor having to defeat insidious insects that have taken over a small village. Muy intriguing.

While those all sound excellent, I’m most excited for the fourth book, Engines of War, written by George Mann and starring The War Doctor, played in “The Day of the Doctor” by John Hurt (duh). In it, during the very height of the Great Time War, in which the Time Lords and Daleks are throwing everything at each other, the Doctor and a young Dalek hunter named Cinder uncover a new and potentially universe-ending Dalek plot and have to thwart it before it’s too late. How cool!
