Florence and The Machine Cover Justin Bieber’s ‘Where are Ü Now?’

If you’ve heard “Where Are Ü Now?” by Justin Bieber with Skrillex and Diplo (it’s hard not to, the song is everywhere), you’ll know that it features a high energy EDM sound. And Bieber’s live performances always go big or go home. While there’s nothing wrong with that, Florence and the Machine have now done a cover for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, and their version offers a darker flavor that slows things down, while giving a gentle tug on your heartstrings.

Florence’s voice is tender and sultry, and it gives the song a renewed sexiness. There’s an acute dose of pain injected into this version; the notion of love seems far-reaching, the need for that person more desperate. Florence reaches that emotional core with the vulnerability and intensity that we’ve come to love her for. Perhaps what’s most impressive, though, is that every word out of her mouth feels so genuine. I believe that these really are precarious times, and this character is at war with love. Florence gingerly performs the song as if the lyrics are hers, and this is the first time she’s uttered them out loud.

If you’re keen to hear more from the British songstress, she is currently on tour so be sure to check out the dates. Her new album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful is available now via iTunes.
