A FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S Movie is in the Works

Director Chris Columbus is known for his family fare, having directed Home Alone and Home Alone 2, Mrs. Doubtfire, and the first two films in the Harry Potter franchise. But Columbus isn’t exactly stranger to horror, either (he did write the screenplay for Gremlins), so it shouldn’t be too much of a shock that he’s about to dive into the genre with film adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s video game Five Nights at Freddy’s. As first reported by Deadline, Columbus has signed on with Blumhouse to write, produce, and direct the newly announced film.

On Monday, Blumhouse tweeted the following, announcing the collaboration.

If you’re unfamiliar, Five Nights at Freddy’s was created by Cawthon in 2014. The story revolves around security guard Mike Schmidt, who must survive working the night shift at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza before the animatronic characters that come to life try to kill him. If you’ve ever been to a birthday party (as a kid or an adult) at Chuck E. Cheese’s and see the animatronics moving around, you can understand why this game is such a big hit.

No word as to the plot of the film just yet, but with six video games and a series of novels, there will be a lot for Columbus to pull from.

So what do you think? Is Chris Columbus a good fit for Five Nights at Freddy’s? Will this hopefully break the video game movie curse? Let me know on Twitter @donnielederer or sound off in the comments below.
