First Teaser for Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR

Any time Christopher Nolan has a new movie, there’s always a huge amount of anticipation and speculation, and rightfully so. Besides his work on his mondo-hit Dark Knight Trilogy, he’s also made some of the most thought-provoking and visually dazzling films in the last 20 years. And, true to form, he gives away as little of the game as possible beforehand.

His new film, Interstellar, which is due for release November 4th of next year, is just another in a long line of Nolan films where we know next to nothing about it, save a brief description and a vague teaser. Remember the first teaser for Inception? That didn’t tell anybody what it was about. Like, at all.

The Interstellar teaser shows us various clips from the space program, from the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Columbia, etc missions, and pairs them with Matthew McConaughey’s hopeful, though somewhat obscure, monologue about exploring the stars, not giving up, and being all that we can be. The final shot of the teaser show people looking up at a rocket being fired into the stratosphere. From this, you might think it’s about the space program, or a political movie about getting back funding for NASA. But it’s not.

IMDb’s description of the movie is as follows: “A group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.” So this could be about aliens or something. We truly have no idea, but now we can speculate about it for another 11 months. Thanks, Chris.

Interstellar boasts an impressive cast including Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck, and Nolan’s most frequent collaborator, Michael Caine. The teaser is currently showing before The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Bring on the sci-fi!

I wonder if, given what I take away from the description, Nolan can make a better version of Carl Sagan’s ‘Contact’ than Robert Zemeckis did….
