First SNOWDEN Trailer Turns the True Story into a Spy Thriller

The saga of former NSA and CIA operative Edward Snowden has become one of the most compelling stories of the past few years…and it’s far from over! But director Oliver Stone is already giving him the biopic treatment in his upcoming film, Snowden.

Open Road Films has released the first trailer for Snowden, which features Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the title role. The trailer essentially offers a cliffnotes version of Snowden’s life as he is forced to abandon his dreams of being among the special forces and goes to work for CIA. We also get to see a brief glimpse of Nicolas Cage as a U.S. Intelligence official before Snowden becomes horrified by the extent of the government’s covert surveillance of ordinary citizens.

From there, the trailer plays more like a conventional Hollywood thriller as Snowden and his allies attempt to reveal what they’ve learned without getting themselves killed or thrown into prison.

Open Road also released a new poster for Snowden, which has a very Enemy of the State vibe to it:

In this film, The Divergent Series star Shailene Woodley plays Snowden’s girlfriend Lindsay Mills, alongside Zachary Quinto as journalist Glenn Greenwald, Melissa Leo as documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras, and Tom Wilkinson as The Guardian’s intelligence correspondent Ewen MacAskill. Snowden also features Rhys Ifans, Scott Eastwood, Joely Richardson, Timothy Olyphant, and Ben Schnetzer in supporting roles.

Snowden will be released in theaters on Friday, September 16.
