First Promo for CW’s RIVERDALE Features a Brooding, Sexy Archie

Hold onto your Jugheat hats, guys. This isn’t your mother’s Archie. This morning, The CW released (via Entertainment Weekly) the first promo for their new gritty (yet sexy) take on the world of Archie Comics: Riverdale. Judging from this first teaser, the names are the same as the classic comics, but everything else is going to be much, much different. You can watch the first teaser above.

According to EW, this new iteration of Riverdale, produced by DC Comics-TV guru Greg Berlanti, is set in the present day. So don’t go in expecting Archie Andrews to perform “Sugar, Sugar” with his wholesome band for the school talent show.

Instead, this will be a serious, broody drama, and will follow Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) and other well known characters from the comics like Betty, Veronica and Jughead, as they begin their sophomore year of high school while dealing with a Veronica Mars/Twin Peaks style murder-mystery. Unlike those series, the murder victim won’t be the school’s most popular girl, but instead “high school golden boy” Jason Blossom.

In the great tradition of teen shows past like 90210 and Gossip Girl, these teenagers will also all look like very hot, very ripped 25 year olds. Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told EW “It’s definitely Archie, but a little darker, a little more complex and a little weirder than you might remember from the digest you bought at the supermarket.” Judging from this trailer, I would say that’s probably an understatement.

Riverdale also stars Camila Mendes as Veronica, Lili Reinhart as Betty, Cole Sprouse as Jughead, Mädchen Amick as Betty’s mother Alice, Luke Perry as Archie’s father Fred, and Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom. It premieres Thursday, January 26 at 9 p.m. on The CW.

Update: In addition to Stranger Things‘ Barb (Shannon Purser), Riverdale has landed another familiar face. According to Deadline, Molly Ringwald  has a reccuring role as Archie’s mom, Mary. Ringwald is obviously no stranger to iconic teen stories, and her character is yet another twist on a classic. Though she’s been absent from Riverdale for two years, Mary returns to the town in “her family’s hour of need.”
