First Photo Of Crossbones On Set Of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

When Frank Grillo first appeared in Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier as S.H.I.E.L.D. operative named Brock Rumlow, comic book fans knew it wouldn’t be too long before he was reintroduced as his masked supervillain alter ego Crossbones.

In the comics, Rumlow was a criminal turned mercenary who came under the employ of one Johann “The Red Skull” Schmidt. So, after Rumlow made his first appearance in Winter Soldier, and was revealed to have survived the final battle, everyone knew exactly what was coming. Finally, it has been revealed via the actor’s Twitter that Frank Grillo is not only on set for Captain America: Civil War, but has been seen in full costume.

Rumlow was in a pretty rough state at the end of the previous Captain America movie, so it’s good to see he’s up and about again. At this point, it is not a surprise to see Marvel Studios creating a look for their characters that is strongly connected to their comic book counterpart, but also steeped in enough reality to not have anyone running around in spandex body suits. In his first comic appearances, Crossbones sported what looked like a luchador mask with a skull design on it, a sleeveless body suit with the crossbones logo across the chest, and a belt/holster combo to add the military element of being a mercenary.

As time went on, and comics moved into the Modern Era, Crossbones gained more and more mercenary style to his outfit, and that is easily seen reflected back in his Cinematic Universe portrayal. The interesting addition is what looks like mechanical gauntlets that will most likely be increasing Crossbones’ strength and destructive capability. Looks like Cap is going to have his hands full on multiple fronts this time around.
