If you are a teenage girl and would-be hero trying to save your island home and its people from a “whole ocean of bad,” you can always use some help. So who better to seek out than a shape-shifting demigod to join you on your mission? Of course, just make sure you get his titleâall of his titlesâcorrect when asking for that help, since demigods can be a little full of themselves.
Walt Disney Animation Studios has released the first full official trailer for their newest CG film Moana, the story of a young Hawaiian girl (voiced by Alui’i Cravalho) who “uses her navigational talents to set sail for a fabled island,” and is joined by the vain but good-hearted demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson).
With its setting among the islands and waters of Oceania, the movie looks gorgeous, and this trailer promises a classic “unlikely buddy road trip “comedy/action-adventure film, with two very unlikely and very different heroes.
Moana comes from the creators of Frozen, Big Hero 6, and Zootopia, including directors Ron Clements and John Musker, who are responsible for such films as Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. The movie also features music from Lin-Manuel Miranda. So yes, our expectations for this are very high, and this trailer only made them higher.
This past summer, Disney shared images and details for the film’s characters, and if we were excited about Alan Tudyk‘s stupid rooster Heihei before, this trailer has us thinking he might steal every scene he is in.
Moana opens in time for Thanksgiving, on November 23.
