First MOANA Clip Shows She’s Not Impressed by Demigod Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

First MOANA Clip Shows She’s Not Impressed by Demigod Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

It’s always tricky when you meet your heroes. Can they live up to your lofty expectations, or do they disappoint you by not being everything you hoped for? What’s not as hard is meeting someone that thinks they are your hero, but really isn’t, because then you can just hit them in the stomach with an oar.

At least that’s what happens in this first clip from the upcoming Disney animated film Moana, when the movie’s young heroine encounters the very full-of-himself demigod Maui. The self-proclaimed hero, voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who is very proud of his status as a widely beloved figure. Needless to say, Moana is not as impressed with his celebrity as he is.

The first part of this scene, where Maui insists on her including all of his epithets when greeting him, has been included in some of the movie’s trailers, but her reaction to this spectacle is new (as is that so-bad-it’s-great “Tweet” joke). Most importantly, the clip gives us an idea about the type of relationship the two will have in the film. Moana, voiced by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, isn’t going to allow herself to be big-leagued by her accomplished companion, nor will she be impressed by his power, as the two journey forward together… although it was kind of impressive how he signed his autograph with a rooster.

Moana, co-written and co-directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (Aladdin, The Little Mermaid), opens in theaters next month, on November 23rd. What did you think of this clip? Does it make you more excited for the film? Tell us why in the comments below.
