Take a First Look at Marvel’s BLACK PANTHER # 1

At the end of Secret Wars, everything was coming up Black Panther. His homeland—Wakanda—was restored to its former glory, and his nation was suddenly on the forefront of Earth’s push into space. But in the new Black Panther ongoing series, T’Challa’s problems at home could destroy him.

The people of Wakanda still remember that T’Challa has failed to protect them in the past, and now there’s a revolution brewing. A group of superpowered terrorists have entered Wakanda and ignited a fight for the nation’s future. Even with all of his abilities, T’Challa may not be able to hold Wakanda together.

Incoming Black Panther writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and veteran artist Brian Stelfreeze are teaming up for the new series. The Atlantic—home to most of Coates’ journalistic endeavors—posted an extended preview of the first few pages from Black Panther # 1, which finds T’Challa helpless to prevent a massacre of his own people when they rise up against him. But if you look closely at the pages, you can see one of the terrorists is using her powers to turn the people against their king.

“‘A Nation Under Our Feet’ is a story about dramatic upheaval in Wakanda and the Black Panther’s struggle to do right by his people as their ruler. The indomitable will of Wakanda — the famed African nation known for its vast wealth, advanced technology and warrior traditions — has long been reflected in the will of its monarchs, the Black Panthers. But now the current Black Panther, T’Challa, finds that will tested by a superhuman terrorist group called The People that has sparked a violent uprising among the citizens of Wakanda. T’Challa knows the country must change to survive — the question is, will the Black Panther survive the change?”

Black Panther # 1 will be released in April.
