First Look at SHERLOCK Manga’s English Language Debut

Ever since the words Sherlock and “manga” were first used in the same sentence, we’ve been excited for the inevitable English-language premiere of adapter-artist Jay’s take on the popular BBC sleuthing series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Titan Comics has picked up the series for distribution in the UK and North America and we have a look at a couple of pages from the first of the series, based on the first episode, “A Study in Pink.” It’s kind of amazing how well Sherlock translates to manga form. Have a look!

Manga’s use of irregular panels really adds a frenetic energy to the story, a good way to replicate Paul McGuigan’s fast handheld camerawork in the actual episode. Here’s another page for your enjoyment:

This one’s great because Jay is able to capture Sherlock’s weird childlike excitement about the case at hand. He somehow looks both more deranged and more innocent at the same time. Coupled with Steven Moffat’s quick dialogue, the panels really pop.

The first issue of the English-language reprint is a massive 52-page affair and will go on sale Wednesday, June 8, wherever comics are sold.

In the gallery below, please also take a look at the five covers for the first issue, a staple of Titan’s releases. The first one is by Jay himself, the second a photo cover, the third by Alex Ronald, the fourth by Rod Reis, and the fifth (my personal favorite) is done by Question No. 6.

What do you think of the Sherlock manga? Will you be following your favorite Sherlock and John adventures in this new format? Let us know in the comments below!
