American and British Sherlock fans have been missing out on some prime Sherlock awesomeness. For four years now, Japan has had the Sherlock manga based on the wildly popular BBC series starring the Internet’s boyfriend (and chocolate Easter treat), Benedict Cumberbatch, and everyone’s favorite Hobbit, Martin Freeman. Last month, it was announced that the title was coming to the US and the UK via Titan Comics. Today io9 has a bunch of first-look pictures for the series, including both variant covers and a main page.
The English language version will have new content, so even if you’ve managed to read the Japanese ones or the fan translations that are posted online, this will likely be worth it. They’ll be larger, have more pages, additional covers from new artists, and even some new artwork. The first one is entitled Sherlock: A Study in Pink. Recognize that name? It’s the first episode of the BBC series, so if you haven’t watched yet, you can consider these your Cliff’s Notes. The story and art come to us from manga artist Jay and from what we’re getting a look at, it’s kind of perfect.
Check out some of the variant covers in the gallery below and head over to io9 to see even more. Sherlock: A Study in Pink #1 will hit stores in the US and UK on June 8, 2016. Now, can we please have a Twitter discussion about the magic that is manga-Benedict Cumberbatch’s hair? His flowing locks rival that of Kylo Ren. Perhaps we should have a “Who wore it better?” poll? Tweet me/us @JennaBusch/@Nerdist and let us know who’s glorious mane you envy more. Kylo Ren did have that helmet-removal moment that really should have had him shaking his head from side to side in slow motion. Still, Ampersand Crumblybatch merely has to stand there to look artfully tousled. Thoughts?
