Last year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters without a comic book adaptation, which was a break in Star Wars tradition. Presumably Lucasfilm was just being extra cautious to prevent further leaks about the plot. But this summer, The Force Awakens is finally coming to comics from Marvel!
Star Wars: Aftermath novelist Chuck Wendig and Mighty Avengers artist Luke Ross are adapting Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a six-issue limited series which will retell the story of the movie. Assuming that youâve seen the film, there shouldnât be any major surprises. It takes place roughly 30 years after Return of the Jedi, as a new generation of heroes emerge to take on the First Order and the malevolent Kylo Ren.
Marvel has released a few of Rossâ The Force Awakens pages which depict Poe Dameronâs capture on Jakku, as well as his initial meeting with Finn. The other pages feature Ray on Jakku and General Hux discovering Finnâs betrayal.
You can see the rest of the preview pages in our gallery below alongside the covers by Esad Ribic, Joe Quesada, and Phil Noto. John Cassaday will also be providing a variant cover for the miniseries, but it wasnât included in this preview.
While The Force Awakens comic appears to be sticking fairly close to the movie, weâd love to see some of the lost and deleted scenes reintegrated into the story. Hopefully weâll even get the chance to see Maz Kanata show off those Force powers of hers!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens #1 will be released on Wednesday, June 22.
