Magic is real, within the world of author Lani Sarem’s debut novel, Handbook for Mortals. Later this month, Handbook for Mortals will introduce readers to Zade, a young woman gifted in magick who runs away from home and joins a world famous magic show on the Las Vegas strip. But she may soon have to call upon magick to save her own life.
Sarem is a former band manager of the Plain White T’s, 100 Monkeys, and Blues Traveler. Sarem is also an actress and a writer, and Handbook for Mortals will also be the very first novel published by Clare Kramer’s GeekNation. The e-book and the hardcover edition of Handbook for Mortals will be released on August 15, but we’ve got the exclusive first look at the cover for the book!

Handbook for Mortals is envisioned as the first in a YA series of novels that has already drawn some interest from Hollywood. American Pie star Thomas Ian Nicholas is already attached to Handbook for Mortals as a producer and an actor. For a better idea of what the novel is about, here’s the complete description from GeekNation.
âHandbook For Mortals is the first book in an urban fantasy/paranormal romance series that centers around Zade, a free-spirited twenty-something girl who comes from a long dynasty of tarot card readers who practice magick. Determined to forge her own path, Zade leaves her home in Tennessee to break free from Dela, her overprotective mother. Zade travels to Las Vegas and unbeknownst to anyone, she uses her supernatural powers to get cast in a premiere magic show led by the infamous magician Charles Spellman.
Behind the scenes of this multimillion dollar production, Zade finds herself caught in a love triangle with Mac, the showâs handsome but rough-around-the-edges technical director, and Jackson, the tall, dark, handsome, charming bandleader. During a hugely complicated illusion, Zade is critically injured and her only hope is a special kind of magick to save her…even that may be too late…”
