First Look at Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman’s DREAM STATE

Regardless of the quality of the comic books they adorn, Dave McKean’s covers have never ceased to dazzle with their always unique fusions of illustration and collage. When paired with Neil Gaiman’s writing, however, McKean’s work reaches a level few graphic artists can hope to attain. That’s why Vertigo’s upcoming Dream State: The Collected Dreaming Covers is cause for rejoice. For it not only features McKean’s complete covers from the titular Sandman spin-off series, but the artist’s work from Sandman: Overture, Sandman Presents, The Sandman Companion, and other related titles — as well as thematically-linked personal work. Best of all, it offers never-before-published illustrations for a brand-new Neil Gaiman-penned story featuring the Sandman himself. Dream State: The Collected Dreaming Covers is due out on November 12 from Vertigo for $49.99 (though you can pre-order it for much less from some online retailers). If Gaiman and J.H. Williams’ Sandman: Overture hasn’t been coming out as frequently as you’d hoped, this might be just the thing to satisfy your craving for more of the King of Dreams.
