Last year, CM Punk walked away from his wrestling career and shifted over to MMA and UFC fighting. He also made his comic book debut for Marvel and DC at that time in 2014. But this November, Punk will co-write the first ongoing comic book series for Drax the Destroyer!
Co-writing the Drax series with Punk is comic book veteran Cullen Bunn, and the duo have artist Scott Hepburn attached as well. Prior to the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Drax was not a well-known character among the general public. Like the other Guardians, Drax is getting his shot at solo stardom as Marvel attempts to transform the Guardians of the Galaxy comics into a best-selling franchise.
To coincide, Marvel has released several preview pages from Drax # 1, which features the title character alongside the new Guardians of the Galaxy: The Thing, Kitty Pryde (a.k.a. Star-Lady), Venom (Flash Thompson), Groot, and the teamâs new leader, Rocket Raccoon! Of course, Drax is never shy about smashing his enemiesâa gift and a curseâas seen in the pages in our gallery below.
The first issue of Drax will feature a primary cover by Hepburn, with variant covers by Ed McGuinness, Skottie Young, and Mike Choi.
Casual fans may note that the comic book incarnation of Drax isn’t quite as funny as his cinematic counterpart, but that could change with this series. One thing that is consistent for Drax is his hatred for Thanosâsomething that will be explored in this series as Drax attempts to hunt down the Mad Titan and end Thanos once and for all.
Before you run out and buy Drax # 1 on Wednesday, November 4, check out a blast from Punk’s past as he hosts Grammar Slam for Nedist in this video from last year!
