First GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Art Reveals Mantis!

San Diego Comic-Con 2016 is happening next week (!), and the bounty of nerd-tastic news has already begun. Entertainment Weekly‘s annual Comic-Con issue offers previews of several big upcoming films, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Power Rangers, and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. All of which we’ll break down for you in today’s Movie Morsels…

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

It’s finally here! Our first look at James Gunn’s super-space-adventure sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Granted it’s in the form of concept art, but who cares when we get to see what Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, and our other favorites will look like in their next epic. Best of all, it introduces their newest cosmic ally, Pom Klementieff’s antennaed Mantis! Gunn himself shared the art, which is featured in the latest Entertainment Weekly, on Facebook…

Power Rangers

EW also has the first official action shot from next year’s Power Rangers, which finds Elizabeth Banks’ Rita Repulsa fighting singer Becky G’s Yellow Ranger. G describes the scene: “Rita tries to make Trini feel like she’s the weakest link of the Power Rangers, and she feels it’s easiest to go for her. Rita’s the type to play a lot of mind games, and Trini’s [thinking], ‘Can I really overpower Rita Repulsa or can I not?'”

Star Trek Beyond

Paramount has been playing up Sofia Boutella’s Jaylah quite a bit in the most recent marketing for Star Trek Beyond. And why shouldn’t they? The actress and dancer stole most every scene she was in in Kingsman: The Secret Service. So there’s no reason to think she won’t do so again, with or without her character’s black-and-white face makeup. Here’s the latest featurette on the film, which finds Jaylah bonding with Simon Pegg’s Scotty…

Pete’s Dragon

Two, not one, but two new clips from Disney’s Pete’s Dragon remake have landed online, and they both tell us a little more about the film’s young hero. Here’s the first clip in which we’ve seen Pete and his titular pal Elliot interacting, in a scene that can’t help but remind me of The Neverending Story. Hmmm… Maybe it’s the fur.

The second clip is a little more sedate, with Pete learning about the concept of imaginary friends…

The David Lowery directed fantasy film—starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence, and Robert Redford—will be here on August 12.

Trainspotting 2

Is it just me or does Ewan McGregor look like he hasn’t aged a single day since he made Trainspotting? That’s certainly good news for Danny Boyle, who’s again directing the Scottish thespian in the sequel, Trainspotting 2 (arriving on January 27). But if you don’t believe me, check out some of the photos that have just appeared online from the film’s shoot in Edinburgh, in which McGregor and his co-star Ewen Bremner recreate a scene from the original film…

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Finally today, we have one more “first look” from good ol’ Entertainment Weekly. The below image shows Jude Law’s Big Bad, Vortigern, in Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Law’s always been a reliable character actor, and he’s done some decent work with Ritchie before as Watson in the director’s Sherlock Holmes franchise. But Law is especially good at playing cads, as in The Talented Mister Ripley. So I’m anxiously awaiting his performance in this March 24 release.
