For over a decade, the further adventures of the Serenity crew were published by Dark Horse Comics. But on the road to San Diego Comic-Con, Boom! Studios has revealed it’s taking over as the publisher for Joss Whedon‘s cult favorite characters and launching with a brand new Firefly comic.
Via Entertainment Weekly (EW), writer Greg Pak and artist Dan McDaid will be the creative team for an ongoing Firefly comic book series. For the first storyline, Pak and McDaid will dive into the past to explore the Unification War, the system wide conflict between the Alliance and the outer planets that was only hinted at during the Firefly TV series. That war ended with a crushing loss for the “Browncoats,” including the Serenity’s captain, Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, and his first mate, Zoe Alleyne.
I’m thrilled to announce that @danmcdaid, @J9Schaefer, and I are making brand new FIREFLY comics for @boomstudios! https://t.co/wlIjC9JPJu

âItâs high time we got to see the full story of Mal and Zoeâs meeting and mission in the War of Unification â the good and bad that the pressure of war brings out in them, and the unforeseeable consequences,â said Whedon in a statement provided to EW. Whedon will act as a story consultant on the new Firefly comics.
Fans of Dark Horse’s Serenity comics may also be pleased to learn that Boom! Studios will be republishing those tales as collections under the Firefly: Legacy Edition banner. While a release date for that reprint was not announced, Firefly #1 will be released in November.
