FEAR THE WALKING DEAD Gives Us Chills at Comic-Con 2015

The Walking Dead‘s hotly anticipated prequel/spinoff series, Fear the Walking Dead, brought its titular terror to this weekend’s Comic-Con 2015. While our own Kyle Anderson wrote a live blog of the Fear the Walking Dead Comic-Con presentation in Hall H, I joined a group of reporters in sitting down to speak with the show’s stars (including Mercedes Mason and Ruben Blades, pictured above), as well as executive producer/makeup whiz Greg Nicotero.

No stranger to horror, having provided makeup effects for countless films and TV shows, Nicotero explained that Fear the Walking Dead‘s frights will differ from those of The Walking Dead. Whereas The Walking Dead is obviously inspired by George Romero’s zombie films, Fear will take its cue from paranoia-driven thrillers like director Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Nicotero pointed out that even some of the camera angles are the same. He added that while The Walking Dead‘s zombies are easy to identify, the spinoff’s newly born walkers are not, and could be mistaken by many who will be unfamiliar with the new plague as merely sick or behaving oddly.

When corpses are shown turning into walkers, they will take their visual cue from Amy’s transformation in season 1 of The Walking Dead, which Nicotero described as “beautiful.” The multihyphenate further explained that the best way of describing the show is to recall Hitchcock’s definition of suspense, in which people sit at a table, beneath which is a bomb about to go off; a bomb that the characters aren’t aware of, but the viewer is.
