FATHER OF THE BRIDE 3 in the Works; Steve Martin Not Yet Offered Role

Of the movies that gets sequels these days, most have to focus on some sort of superpowers or lots of explosions. Recently, sequels for a comedy franchise have been only granted to the likes of The Hangover, Grown Ups, or  Beverly Hills Cop. Something like Father of The Bride, though it already had a sequel, seems less than likely to get any play in the current field of studio tentpole franchises. Yet, Nikki Finke reports that deals are being made between Disney and Warner Bros. for Father of The Bride 3. What’s possibly even more surprising about this announcement is that the plot for this sequel centers around gay marriage.

Finke offered some specifics, “…Little Matty is now 29 and gay and getting married to a Navy SEAL’s son.  Father of the bride George is ‘thunderstruck and speechless’ and has problems with the whole gay thing. So wife Nina kicks him out of the house…” Focusing on gay marriage is surely a motivating factor in the revival of this franchise, especially given Modern Family‘s inclusion of a happily married gay couple.

So far, Charles Shyer, who directed and co-wrote the original Father of The Bride and Father of The Bride II, has been in these negotiations between Disney and Warner Bros. to write and direct this third installment. However, despite what Finke claimed, Steve Martin, the star of this comedy franchise, has yet to be looped in at all. Just an hour after Finke posted the news, Steve Martin tweeted a response:

Nikki Finke hasn’t commented on the tweet. The only thing posted after this news on NikkiFinke.com is an “NF Advisory” stating, “For the next 36 hours, I need to work with my attorneys.” Still, this doesn’t change the fact that Hollywood is getting into a third sequel of what is a remake of a classic Spencer Tracy vehicle from 1950.

I don’t know – wouldn’t it be a little insulting for Matty to be the “bride”?  I’m not gay or male, but when my friends got married they were both grooms.  Insisting on having a “bride” is like asking a gay couple “which one of you is the woman?”  Not okay.

  2. Quinn says:

I wonder if Carrie and Katie feel the same way about Tyler Perry movies?  Really Hollywood more movies with black people, sheesh!  We get it!  Sounds ridiculous, right?

  3. Katie says:

FIrst making Gobber gay in HTTYD 2 and now this?! We get it Hollywood, tolerance and what-not…now stop shoving down our throats!

    • Collin says:

Dear, sweet Katie…  Count how many instances of physical affection you see between straight people (on screens) in one day, and compare it to how many instances of gay affection that you see.  Then you can complain all you want about the over-abundance of same-sex representation.Love, Homo McGayshorts

I’m still holding out for Sister Act 3. They need to complete the trilogy.

  5. Carrie says:

I’m all about equality, but this is getting ridiculous.

    • David says:

What do you mean. Ridiculous that there is going to be third sequel? Why would that bother you?

    • Collin says:

Sick of all those gay weddings in other major Hollywood films, I guess?  Which ones exactly?
