British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw loves to break our hearts. As Yorkie in Black Mirror‘s “San Junipero,” her afterlife love story threw us for a loop, and gave us hope that the beauty of self-discovery doesn’t end when our mortal clock stops ticking. Now, she’s exploring a different corner of the psyche in the Lionsgate superhero film, Fast Color. Here’s the first trailer from Entertainment Weekly.
Mbatha-Raw stars as Ruth, a woman with superhuman abilities who went on the run when her powers were discovered. After years of holing up alone in the farmhouse where she grew up, Ruth’s mother (Lorraine Toussaint) and daughter (Saniyya Sidney) track her down. Fast Color tells the story of their shared abilities and the bond between mothers and daughtersâa bond so powerful, it’s superhuman. That was the genesis according to writer/director Julia Hart, who penned the script with her husband, La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz.
âMy husband and I came up with the idea for the movie when we became parents,â Hart told EW. âI just felt this superhuman strength that I had never felt before when I became a mother. So, the idea for the movie came from this notion that mothers are superheroes. I realized that Iâd never seen a movie where there was actually a superhero who was a mother.”
Fast Color premiered at last year’s SXSW Film Festival to positive reviews and arrives in theaters March 24. If the trailer is any indication, this could be another grounded, powerful family superhero story in the vein of something like Unbreakable. We can’t wait to check it out either way, just please tread carefully on our emotions, Gugu. We’re still recovering from that “San Junipero” ending.
