Farewell, “Futurama”

Well, in case you haven’t heard the news, the comng season of Futurama will be its last. Comedy Central announced that the series finale will air September 4th after a run of episodes starting June 19th that will include guest shots from Larry Bird, Dan Castellaneta, Sarah Silverman, George Takei, Adam West, and Burt Ward. Total over seven seasons: 140 episodes. Not bad.

From the press release:

“I’m very proud of the upcoming season. If this is indeed the end of Futurama, it’s a fantastic finish to a good, long run,” said creator and Executive Producer Matt Groening.

“Having the opportunity to bring Futurama back for 52 episodes over these last four years has been a thrill for all of us at COMEDY CENTRAL. The upcoming season promises to be the best final season of Futurama yet,” said Dave Bernath, EVP Program Strategy & Multi Programming.

Well, then, that’s sad, but at least Fry, Leela, Zoidberg, Bender, et al. are going out before the show’s worn out its welcome. Post your reaction in the comments below, but if you’re in the mood for a more philosophical take on the show, the PBS Idea Channel recently posited that Futurama is actually an argument against transhumanism, that the non-euphoric states of the cast indicate that even if technology solves all human woes and makes us immortal or closer to it, we’ll still have our miseries. (They DO know it’s fiction, right?):

Futurama was the best animated show on tv. Comedy Central ruined it – it has completely sucked. Comedy Central itself went into the sh_tcan about ten years ago. I can’t watch any of the crap they run currently, most of it is either political action committee inspired or just unfunny gross out.

Blame the writers, not the network. It just wasn’t funny when it came back. Period. I was a huge Futurama fan when it was originally on the air, and I was elated to hear it was coming back. But I was sorely disappointed when it did.

  2. Greg says:

2013 just hit Netflix and as someone that watches the first five seasons and the movies an some of season seven nightly. I have to give away all my Futurama shirts as I would be embarrassed if anyone thought I enjoyed the steaming pile that Futurama has become. It is as if aliens have hollowed out the Planet Express Crew and are wearing there skins around pretending to be the same cool characters that were Futurama. It huts my eyes its so bad. Whatever Ivy League washouts they have writing for them need to accept this is not the Simpsons and stop trying to make it a cheap knock off.

  3. Talus says:

Hopefully the show will find more life somewhere else!

  4. Tia says:

I don’t want to go through this again! This show is so witty and clever and stands above a lot of the garbage on tv. I hope another network picks this up.

  5. Toby says:

    Sad news, everyone.

Still, it got a better run than Firefly.

7 Seasons and a Movie, though, Maybe?

  6. michaelalexkawa says:

The show was great when it was on FOX ,but I can’t stand the CC episodes ,I even forgot it was still on .

  7. qwerty says:

It well and truly jumped the shark last season.

  8. PoddSocks says:

    Go to netflix, seriously.

  9. amoulayi says:

The first sentence has a typo. “Comng season”. Just thought I’d let you know.

  10. Hunter says:

I’m saddened by the news, Perry. I just found out about it when I got to my office at DISH this evening. I want the series to go on, but reaching 7 seasons after being canceled once is something to be proud of. If Futurama doesn’t come back on another channel, at least I will still have the whole series recorded to my DISH Hopper DVR. It holds up to 2000 hours of recordings, so I can keep Futurama stored without worrying about taking space away from my other shows.

  11. Paul kg says:

I’m looking forward to the next season. But i’m bummed that it’s ending. Why if simpsons can run for forever, can’t we continue to enjoy Futurama? Hmmmmm?

  12. CJ says:

The ONLY reason we don’t have further Seasons of FUTURAMA is Comedy Central (aka Viacom) won’t pay what the voice actors deserve (@ least we got as many Seasons as we could, which is more than I can say for THE CLEVELAND SHOW) ….

  13. Maiku says:

I would except that if anyone would pick it up and keep it going it would be Cartoon Network/Adult Swim as it did well for them when they were airing reruns. That said they may only want to air reruns and won’t care about funding new episodes.

  14. Shayde says:

With all the dreck on the networks, it is sad when a real gem ends. ALL HAIL HYPNOTOAD.

  15. Flabeo says:

NETFLIX!! For those that don’t know, outside the U.S. it isn’t that easy to find new episodes of Futurama, a local station needs to pickup the rights and even then the episode may be “old” by the time it airs. This means eager fans have to pirate a copy if they want to see a new episode before it’s spoiled on Facebook, Twitter or whatever.
Personally I really enjoy Futurama but I usually just wait for the new episodes to show up on Netflix. However, if they picked up the show like Arrested Development then they would have much further reach on day 1. Not to mention, Futurama fans tend to be a little more “tech savvy” than most others.

  16. NeuroMan42 says:

Futurama has sucked tentacles since it came back. I am glad it got cancelled. Simpsons should have died over 5 years ago. It is horribly written series.

  17. jm5150 says:

    cartoon network anyone?

  18. Roger F. Gay says:

Make another comeback Futurama. I never thought CC was the right place to be anyways.
