FANTASTIC BEASTS’ Story Will Be Told in 5 Movies, Plus a New Featurette

If you were concerned about whether Newt Scamander, the star of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, would be able to find all the fantastic beasts, worry no more. J.K. Rowling has confirmed the story will unfold over five movies. Yes, five.

That’s so many creatures, y’all.

Fantastic Beasts, debuting on November 18, is a further exploration of the world established in the Harry Potter series. That series of films included eight titles, so maybe these additional movies shouldn’t be a surprise (it was initially announced as a trilogy). Though I’m flummoxed about what the plot will follow and how it will expand, I shouldn’t be. The world of Fantastic Beasts hasn’t been established in a series of seven novels. We had expectations with Harry Potter and an idea of how much story had to be told, but with Fantastic Beasts, the door is wide open.

News about the expansion of the Fantastic Beasts story came right after a Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them IMAX fan event. The cast gathered for a Q&A in the United Kingdom, and fans watched in person, in theaters around the globe, and on Facebook. Warner Bros. dropped a shiny featurette for the occasion (what’s the correct marketing spell for making featurettes?) and it cuts together footage with comments from Rowling, director David Yates, and the cast about the story. We’ve seen some of the scenes in the featurette in trailers but not all of them. Scamander’s world looks complex, well thought-out, and hey, five films could be totally feasible. Rowling says, “This is where I was always interested in going.” That’s heartening, right? Watch the short video above.

And, while you’re enjoying your time in the world of witches and wizards, watch the Facebook video from the fan event:
