A Fan Mod Brings Multiplayer To THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the most expansive and immersive video game experiences of all time, but that’s only true for one person at a time. Aside from The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, the Zelda series has been pretty much exclusively a single-player experience, but that’s (unofficially) about to change thanks to a fan mod (via Gamnesia).

A modder who goes by the name Fooni is working on a mod that would bring local multiplayer to the Wii U version of the game (since games on older consoles are typically easier to mod). The way this works is that a second player is given control of one of the game’s NPC’s, which would have modified skins and items so it would look like a second Link. Fooni says this mod won’t actually be finished for another year or so, though, because this stuff is pretty complicated.

Still, Fooni posted some screenshots that seem to show a functional early version of the mod in action, with two Links on screen and even a “You cannot ride Player 1’s horse…” message when Player 2 presumably tried to mount the occupied steed.

This early on, there are still a ton of questions to be answered. For instance, how will the camera work? How about item inventories? What other concerns do you have about this in-progress mod? How excited are you to see it in action? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
