Fan Art Friday #59 – Movie Posters by Ryan Black

Movie posters are in their own category of art. They have to concisely communicate a story in a way that grabs and entices the viewer without giving away spoilers. Their purpose is to make a splash on your eyeballs and get you to fork over cash for a movie ticket. Well, that’s part of their purpose. They also stand on their own as art, and they can become iconic. Sometimes the poster is the first image that comes to my mind when I think about a film–this is the case with The Empire Strikes Back poster by Roger Kastel.

But even with memorable versions already in existence, I like seeing how different artists interpret film posters. Thusly, this week’s Fan Art Friday is all about Ryan Black’s work. He has a whole gallery of his striking versions of posters for movies such as The World’s End, Gremlins, and Jurassic Park. Black’s style emphasizes silhouettes and typefaces and gets right to the point. Some examples:

Visit the gallery below to view more of the posters and see additional examples on DeviantArt.

Need to cover your walls in these posters? You can purchase prints of Ryan’s work at Etsy. The prints come in a variety of sizes from 11 x 17 to 27 x 40 inches. You can choose to buy them with or without the simulated folds on the paper. And bonus: buying multiple posters will get you discounts.

Do you plan on purchasing any of these posters? Let me know in the comments.
