Exclusive: Percy Daggs III Joins THE NEW ADVENTURES OF PETER AND WENDY

The prospect of leaving home and everything and everyone you know and love can be daunting–terrifying, even. It takes guts to step away and into the world at large, and that’s just what Wendy Darling (Paula Rhodes) is doing in Season 2 of The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy. The modern take on J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan stories created by Kyle Walters and Shawn deLoache follows Peter Pan (Walters) and Wendy as they figure out life, love, etc. Season 2 of the International Academy of Web Television (IAWTV)-award winning web series premieres soon, and the next chapter of the story finds Wendy outside the small town setting of Neverland, Ohio and working with Hook. Yes, that Hook. We’re excited to exclusively announce Hook will be portrayed by none other than Percy Daggs III (Veronica Mars, iZombie).

In addition to Daggs, Jim Beaver (Supernatural), Satya Bhabha (New Girl), and Meghan Camarena (Strawburry17) are joining the cast for the second season as George Darling, Smee, and Billy Jukes. You can get a peek at the emotions ahead—and it looks like we should be prepared to experience all the feelings–in the Season 2 trailer above. And because more teases are always a good thing, I spoke with Daggs about playing such an iconic character and getting a little villainous.

Nerdist: How did you get involved in The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy?

Percy Daggs III: Ivan Askwith, who was [a] producer on the Veronica Mars movie, introduced me to Jay Bushman from The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, who I just started to do some work with. I ended up meeting with the team over there, and they were looking for someone for this character and he referred me to them. I came in and auditioned, and it just came together that way. It was actually through a friend of a friend. I thank Ivan for that because it’s turned out to be a great experience.

Nerdist: I know you were part of the Play It Again, Dick web series, but how was this shooting experience different?

Daggs: With Play It Again, Dick, it was a lot of people I had worked with before. Getting into a scene with them and playing a version of a character I was familiar with and having fun with those guys a day or two, in and out–it was pretty great. We shot pretty fast. This is different because it’s a format that I’m not really used to. They shot it vlog style where you speak directly into camera, and the style of comedy was a little different. And again, I’m playing Captain Hook so transitioning into the role, playing the CEO of a major company and a character that’s had such a long history and wanting to do that justice and do it my own way was very different.

It’s my second web series, I guess you can say, I’ve been a part of, but having such a major role and being a lead in it was new to me, too. It was a unique experience, and I learned a lot–which was great because I hopefully want to create my own content so I was like a sponge.

Nerdist: I like that your career has taken a villainous turn lately. You recently appeared on iZombie as a sophisticated bad guy and now a presumably bad Hook.

Daggs: It’s been a nice change for me. I’ve been doing this for a long time now, and I’ve never played many villains or murder suspects or things of that nature so that’s been new territory for me. But it’s also new territory for me because had you known me growing up, you would have thought a lot of my resume would be filled full of comedic roles because that’s the kind of guy I was. I was always silly and always doing anything for a laugh. A lot of my career’s been dramatic roles–some with light moments and comic relief, too, but not just comedy projects. So to be able to do comedy as well as switching it up and playing characters who aren’t the protagonist, I guess you could say, has been refreshing.

Season 2 of The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy premieres on June 12. That means you have plenty of time to go watch Season 1.
