EXCLUSIVE: Patrick Stewart and Whoopi Goldberg on the Legacy of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION

It’s been 20 years since we said goodbye to the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation following an unprecedented and hugely influential seven-season run in syndication. The show became something of an institution with its highly inventive science fiction scripts, its reflection on real-world issues of the day, and especially the cast of highly memorable and beloved characters.

The final season was released on Blu-ray today (Tuesday, December 2nd) and with it, fans get to say their final goodbyes, again, with hours and hours of retrospective bonus materials, including the multi-part documentary “The Sky’s the Limit: The Eclipse of Star Trek: The Next Generation” which follows the making of the final season and the legacy of the series on the cast and crew looking back.

The above clip is from the third part of this documentary and has Captain Picard himself, Patrick Stewart, and Whoopi Goldberg, who played Guinan, discussing how the series has impacted them and where it sits in the pantheon of sci-fi shows today.

Anybody else unable to view the video on mobile because the ad never closes?

  2. Louis says:

I doubt they will do this with Deep Space Nine, but it would be terrific. For all the flak it gets, Deep Space Nine was great writing and pushed several boundaries of its own.

    • James says:

Fortunately it has been confirmed they are working on DS9 for Blu-Ray High Definition.

      • Frank says:

Link? Last I heard, all the people working on the TNG restoration were moving on to other projects and DS9 HD had not been announced.

      • Leon says:

Can you confirm James where/how you heard this news as I must have missed it and will be ecstatic if it is true (or cursing you if its not)!

    • TNG says:

      DS9 was horrible……………………………..

      • Kyten says:

I couldn’t disagree with your more. DS9 was fantastic. I also love Voyager and TNG. Set your phasers to kill, but the one I can’t get in to is the original series. And I watched that growing up!

      • Ommadon says:

I gotta totally disagree wit ya. DS9 was slow and clunky in the first few years, but when tng went off the air. It got a lot more attention and it got really good. I rewatched the whole series a few months back and it was as good as it was back in the day.

        • Balth says:

And I have to agree with most of what you said, except that the last season was just garbage. The first season was as you said a bit “slow and clunky.” Although that may have something to do with the nature of the story (introducing a lot of characters most of which have little or no history with each other.) Everything in between was almost as good as TNG.

      • Blade Walker says:

It’s fun to have dumb opinions on the Internet, isn’t it?

    • Madelyn says:

So very true!  I couldn’t agree with you more!

    • Dustin says:

DS9 got the worst send off for one of the best shows. that always made me mad
