Exclusive: Director James Gunn on Nathan Fillion’s Role in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

On Thursday night I had the opportunity to attend Hollywood’s 40th Annual Saturn Awards, honoring the best in science-fiction, fantasy, and horror film and TV. Many genre favorites attended, but few whose next work in generating as much buzz and excitement as director James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. I caught up with Gunn (pictured above — in a photo he shared today with all of his Facebook fans — trying on an early prototype of Star-Lord’s lenses) backstage after the ceremony. And I asked him about his buddy Nathan Fillion’s much-speculated-about appearance in Guardians. Here’s what Gunn had to tell me about the Marvel character Fillion will be playing…

“Nathan Fillion is not Nova,” said Gunn, who soon wraps post-production and begins the Guardians of the Galaxy worldwide press tour in Singapore on July 7th. “There’s so much bullshit on the internet. I woke up – first it’s ‘Nathan’s Nova!’, then there are articles all over saying Nathan’s Cosmo. It’s like, ‘What?!’ Nathan’s role is a very small cameo that I wanted to give to Nathan because I love working with him and I think it’s lucky for me to have Nathan in all of my movies. At the same time I wanted to give him something where Nathan could have a larger role in the Marvel Universe if either Joss [Whedon] or I or whoever chose to do that in the future. Which I would love to do. I would love to give Nathan something he could really chew on, but it didn’t work out on this movie for two reasons. Number one — because he was shooting Castle. And number two, because it just wasn’t the right exact role for him.”

“You won’t see the Nova character in the film,” added Gunn. “You’ll see the Nova Corps.”

Guardians of the Galaxy opens on August 1. A date that can’t get here soon enough.

  2. shawn says:

how about dressed as captain malcolm reynolds

  3. Jay says:

Please let him be U.S. Archer.  Seeing Nathan behind the wheel of an interstellar big rig would be too great for words!

  4. Ron says:

Just because we see the Nova Corps, doesn’t mean we can’t see Richard Rider.

  5. Bob says:

    J’son of Spartax maybe?

  6. Hunter says:

    Adam Warlock?

  7. Urkel says:

“Castle” is both the best and worst thing ever to happen to Nathan Fillions career.

Having a long running hit show is financially going to set him for life. But his talents are so wasted on it and the number of roles he’s out-aging is just getting ridiculous.

Poor Nathan Fillion. Poor, poor, rich as hell Nathan Fillion.

  8. Orion says:

I would love, since it is Joss we are dealing with, for him to appear as Mal from Firefly, just to have that lil tidbit, it would be hilarious to the few who follow Joss’ work religiously.

  9. Forbush-Man! Pot and all!

  10. Lawrence says:

Wish list -he’s playing  the watcher!
