Fear not, fans of ABC’s Revenge!* Despite the 4 season run of that show ending soon, we have good things to look forward to. Emily VanCamp will be reprising her role as Sharon Carter – “Agent 13” if you’re nasty – in Captain America: Civil War!

Now, by now most of us have seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier and as one of the, lets say, “darker” films of the MCU, what we really got was a spy thriller that just so happened to have some superpowered folks in it. With the sense of a suspenseful and modern spy film noir, it had its fair share of twists and turns. Some are fairly telegraphed like — do I really need to say “spoiler alert” here? I suppose I guess I have to. Alright: SPOILER ALERT! — Nick Fury not really dying or that the Winter Soldier is Cap’s best buddy Bucky. Other twists would feel right at home in any crime dram, like the turn that Arnim Zola has been undermining S.H.I.E.L.D. for decades or that Captain America’s flirty nurse neighbor was actually tasked as a badass undercover bodyguard by Nick Fury himself.

What has me so excited about this, and other aspects of the MCU and television shows, is that it lends real suspense and consequence to the goings-on of the main characters. Sure, Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson was brought back in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but they’ve since destroyed that process and made it clear it probably won’t happen again. In the MCU we know there won’t be a headliner meeting his maker without coming back in an end credits scene, which is why mortal agents are so important. They give the audience a much better analog than the main super-powered characters ever could. Sure, we’d love to be Iron Man, The Hulk, or Thor (which, as an out of shape bald man, oh how I wish I could be Thor!) but we feel for the humans a bit more because they’re really what we would wish we could be. Badass and brave in the face of real danger.

We can only hope that VanCamp’s Agent 13 has a big role in Captain America: Civil War. If filmmakers decide to go with the comic book plot and put her and Cap in a relationship at the onset of Marvel’s Civil War, there’s potential for some real drama. Where Captain America was staunchly against the Superhuman Registration Act, Carter was initially a supporter and, saving you some spoilers, had a pretty great arc herself throughout the series. If Captain America: The Winter Soldier set the overall tone for the Cap movies from now on, I’d like to think that Marvel is on the right track for keeping character development front and center. Developing relationships between the characters we can feel for and the ones we love seeing punch things and blow stuff up is important; and VanCamp’s Agent 13 is certainly the perfect candidate for that.
