Edgar Wright Will Branch out of Comedy in His Next Film BABY DRIVER

When we think of Edgar Wright, the most common image that comes to mind is probably one of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost gently spoofing genre tropes in a goofy, real-world version of what might really happen if a bizarre Hollywood trope actually came true in rural England. But to spoof something well, you need to understand and love the form you’re mocking, and it has been evident for some time that Wright really does love much more than comedy and wants to branch out. His aborted attempt at Ant-Man might have been the first, but instead we now have Baby Driver, which the director calls “genuinely tense and threatening.”

Entertainment Weekly has the first images from the movie, which in and of themselves don’t reveal much, and the first bit of real plot synopsis, which does: Ansel Elgort plays a getaway driver with tinnitus who tries to leave his life of crime when he meets Lily James, and much of the action plays out as if choreographed to the music he uses to drown out the ringing in his ears. Setting action to music isn’t new for Wright, who did so expertly in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, but this time, according to EW, he is going to “shred nerves” in the process.

Wright won’t reveal what the music is yet, beyond stating that “There’s about 35 songs in the movie and they range from very famous to more obscure. It’s supposed to reflect the character’s extremely eclectic taste in music,” because he doesn’t want to spoil the trailers. Dare we hope for some Sex Bob-omb?

Are you pumped for the Wright stuff to move outside his normal comfort zone? Looking forward to seeing how the likes of Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx perform under his direction? Leave your thoughts below, Pilgrim!
