Last night marked the premiere of Spike TV’s Lip Sync Battle, hosted by LL Cool J. Based on the game from The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the show sees two celebrities go head-to-head in a battle of lip syncing to popular songs. Just like on Fallon’s show the winner is decided by crowd reaction, but unlike Fallon’s show he does not appear in every episode. He did appear in the premiere, though. To kick off the maiden voyage, Fallon himself went up against with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Sadly, having been the mind behind the concept, Fallon feels a bit old hat in this opening episode. We have seen him do this several times on his show, or on the clips that have made their way around the internet. Viewers may already be used to his bag of tricks and style of song selection. This gave The Rock a real edge in being the wildcard that people were surprised by. Let’s be honest, when you look at The Rock, you don’t expect his first choice to be Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.”

 

That got the crowd going pretty well, and obviously Jimmy needed to find a way to fight back. He made his best effort with Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” but it wasn’t enough to win the audience back, especially when Johnson donned the classic white leisure suit for “Stayin’ Alive” by The Bee Gees. Don’t believe me? Well that’s hurtful, but you can see for yourself.
