Duncan Jones’ MOON to Get Two Follow-Ups

Duncan Jones is a man who refuses to let things go, and he explained as much recently in an interview with Indiewire. It took four years of intensive work to get the Warcraft movie to the big screen, and when all’s said and done it will have taken 15 years to get his next passion project off the ground. That project is Mute, a sci-fi movie set in the same universe as his 2009 debut feature Moon. The director also equates his career to that of another well-respected maker of thoughtful big-budget sci-fi, Christopher Nolan, in terms of each film building to the next.

“I’ve always wanted to make Mute,” Jones says in the interview, “and I’ve been on Mute for about 14 years. I’m determined, no matter what happens, I’m going to get that movie made, at some point.” Mute will be in the same universe as Moon—the “Moon-iverse,” as Jones calls it—but it won’t be the only new film to join it. He also mentions a third part to the trilogy, which he has already written.

“It’s ready to go,” he says. “I was trying to make it after Source Code. It’s a female lead, and at that time, four of five years ago, it was just proving really difficult to get the film made, this science fiction film with a female lead.” He continues, though, that the idea of a female-led action/sci-fi flick doesn’t seem quite so outlandish to movie executives any longer. “I think there’s more of a willingness for that to happen, and I certainly think it’s about time,” he said.

But don’t get too excited about this third movie, because it’ll probably take some time. “Mute‘s kind of happening now,” Jones explained, “so I’m going to do that, and then, with any luck, I’ll be able to get this other film made that will make up the third part of that trilogy, as soon as possible.”

We loved Moon, so the idea of more films in that same universe (solar system?) is a-okay with us. And we know that Jones will get to them all eventually. Let us know your thoughts on this news in the comments below!
