Drink Your Dinner With New Pork Curry Cola

Even though we’ve covered things like potato chip flavored soda and ramen flavored candy in the past, it’s hard not to be skeptical when a company announces the launch of a pork curry cola on April Fool’s Day. But in the end, it turns out to be for real—on April 1, Japan’s Tombow Beverage Co. introduced a new tonkatsu curry-flavored soda to the public. Are people clamoring for a way to drink their dinners? I’m not sure why so many savory meal-themed drinks are popping up, but clearly there’s a market.

For those not in the know, tonkatsu is a meal consisting of a large pork cutlet, breaded in panko breadcrumbs and fried to a crisp golden brown. Usually served over rice and a bed of smooth Japanese curry, Kanazawa Curry is also drizzled with a touch of savory katsu sauce. My mouth is watering already. This popular dish is a specialty of the Ishikawa Prefecture. Any fried food-lover can tell you, it’s the stuff dreams are made of.

How did the Tombow Beverage Co. get all these delectable flavors into liquid form? Frankly, I don’t want to know and I’m slightly scared of the truth. Nevertheless, they are bottling these strange drinks and selling them in a limited run of 100,000 bottles.

Japan loves releasing limited edition regional foods; the Kanazawa Curry cola will fit right in with Tombow’s Hokuriku Regional Drink Series that is sold in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures.

If you just can’t live without tasting these unique drinks, or maybe you hate chewing your food, then you are more than welcome to go to the Tombow website and order your own 20-pack of curry cola for 3,900 yen ($35).

Does katsu curry cola sounds like a refreshing summertime drink? Let us know in the comments!
