Heads up, Deadites (or whatever Deadpool fans call themselves)… We’ve got the latest and greatest of Deadpool 2 news in today’s Movie Morsels. Plus, Tom Hiddleston on Loki’s return in Thor: Ragnarok, the latest casting news on The Predator and Alita: Battle Angel, and oh so very much more!

Deadpool 2

deadpool1-202017

Hold on to your chimichangas! While Deadpool screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick did indeed drafted a script for the forthcoming sequel, new director David Leitch (of John Wick fame) is letting none other than Drew Goddard have a go at the thing as well. The former Lost producer, as all good fanboys and fangirls well know, is one of the most talented and nerd-friendly scribes in 21st century cinema, having penned Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods, and The Martian, as well as co-created Netflix’s Daredevil and done uncredited work on everything from The Avengers to World War Z. So he’s more than equipped to give the Merc with a Mouth some extra magic the next time he gets nasty. Huzzah!

Thor: Ragnarok

Thor The Dark World Loki Deleted Scene

And speaking of Marvel, are you wondering what’s in store for Loki when the God of Mischief reunites with his brother and meets Doctor Strange in Thor: Ragnarok? While promoting his new Kong: Skull Island, Tom Hiddleston gives us a pretty good idea.

Speaking with IGN, Hiddles remarks, “Cate Blanchett, it’s no secret, is playing the goddess of death, who brings destruction in her wake and it is the kind of destruction that both Thor and Loki have never seen…So they fall back on their brotherhood, fractured though it is, to see what they can do to stop her.”

As for Loki’s take on Stephen Strange, the actor says, “I think he probably dismisses Strange. Yes his sorcerer is very impressive, but Loki has been doing that for centuries, so who cares?.”

The Predator

Yvonne Strahovski

Who might the galaxy’s most fearsome hunter be slaughtering next? Why, it’s Chuck and Dexter star Yvonne Strahovski! The actress is in talks to play the mother of Jacob Tremblay’s character in Shane Black’s The Predator; young Tremblay will find himself in the middle of the danger, which could suggest that Strahovski will as well. Keegan-Michael Key, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen and Olivia Munn fill out the cast nicely.

Alita: Battle Angel

Michelle Rodriguez Is it time for Star Trek to finally have its second female captain leading a series? Then why not Michelle Rodriguez as a young officer on her first command? We know that some fans find Rodriguez to be a polarizing figure in Lost and the Fast and Furious franchises. But we think she could pull off a stint in the captain’s chair. Alternately, Rodriguez seems like a great choice for the new security officer. Would you really pick a fight with her? We wouldn’t!

In other sweet casting news, it seems Fast and Furious staple Michelle Rodriguez has been secretly working all along on Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel, which just wrapped shooting at the filmmaker’s Troublemaker Studios. The two (unrelated) Rodriguezes have worked together before, and I know I’d love to see Michelle wear her Machete character’s eyepatch once more for old time’s sake.

The Discovery

If your taste for horror runs toward the cerebral, you’re in luck–one of this year’s most talked about Sundance entries, The Discovery, will soon be in limited release in theaters and on Netflix. Starring Robert Redford, Jason Segal, and Rooney Mara, it looks like a smart, sophisticated fusion of Flatliners and ’70s Cronenberg. Here’s the trailer…

Logan

Logan

As much as everyone seems to love Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine film Logan, plenty of us still wish we had the chance to see Wolvie wear his classic comic-book costume in at least just one of the films. Yesterday’s Nerdist News took a good look at why we didn’t.
