Douglas Adams’ DIRK GENTLY Will Be a Max Landis-Penned Series on BBC America

Well, it’s official! The long-discussed Dirk Gently series has been given the series green light by BBC America. And as has been the plan all along, Chronicle writer Max Landis has penned the pilot and will serve as an executive producer.

Announced on Friday at the Winter Press Tour of the 2016 Television Critics Association, the series is an adaptation of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams‘ wildly successful comic novels, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and is set in the “unexpected world of the hyper, absurd, eponymous detective Dirk Gently.” The straight to series order includes eight one-hour episodes. (No word on whether or not Landis will write all of them, however.)

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency was once called by Adams as a “thumping good detective-ghost-horror-who dunnit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic,” which is basically everything we love in storytelling. (It is the Stefon-level club of comedic comic novels.)

According to network president Sarah Barnett, “Dirk Gently is a very original series, fresh and unlike anything else. The novels have legions of fans, and with Max Landis’ brilliant and audacious take on this material we are excited to bring Dirk to life for our BBCA super-fans.”

For those perhaps unaware, this is not Dirk Gently‘s first time on the small screen. Back in 2010 (and through 2012), BBC Four did four episodes of the Stephen Mangan-fronted series, with Darren Boyd playing the eponymous detective’s sidekick, Richard MacDuff.
