There’s a new contender for the most beautiful phrase in the English language, and that phrase is “donut fries.â€
Dunkin’ Donuts recently rolled out a number of new menu items in a limited number of locations throughout Boston (via Boston.com). According to an official statement from the company, we could see a nationwide rollout of the $2 snacks in the not-too-distant future. Some of the offerings are logical, others puzzling. But at least a couple are downright magical—none more so than the aforementioned donut fries.
By appearance alone, the fries look less like French fried potatoes and more like a fusion of churros and Auntie Anne’s pretzel bites. And that’s what they taste like, too, given the cinnamon sugar covering and the standard fried dough prep method. Is the “fries†part of “donut fries†a misnomer? Kind of. Does that matter? Not even a little.
Intrepid redditor rsoxgal36 spread the news of the menu expansion last week, noting, in addition to the donut fries, the pretzel bites passed muster (or is it mustard? I’m not sorry). Less palate pleasing, she noted, were the waffle-breaded chicken strips. Other new offerings include, in order of most to least logical, Munchkins dippers, cookies, gluten-free fudge brownies, and ham & cheese roll-ups.
Odd as some of these may be, I’m willing to give this particular chain the benefit of the doubt when it comes to non-donut items. And, after all, donuts are the reason America runs on Dunkin’ in the first place, so these fries are almost certainly delicious. So I say bring on the dipping sauces. My body is ready.
