Weâve all been out and about driving around and seen used mattresses thrown out onto the sidewalk without a second thought. These once-sad discards were seen as lifeless garbage, but now theyâve been given a second life by being transformed into oversized, delicious, non-edible treats.
Laughing Squid gives us a peek at these luscious works of art that seem too good to be true. French street artist Lor-K created an art installation called EAT ME, taking those old mattresses and transforming them into bright, vibrant street art.
The bedding is cut, shaped, spray-painted, and glued into larger than life meals. Taking someoneâs trash and making it into something beautiful is nothing new but creating soft, stuffed food out of it is certainly different. Given the bright colors and details itâs hard to believe that these sculptures were once street garbage.
Lor-K is a master of creating texture and color: bread looks toasted to perfection while a burritoâs tortilla is crinkled just right. She is adept at making dollops of sauces look incredibly realistic. Only until you get a closer look do you realize that poofy whipped cream is actually a sickly mattress cover. Itâs beautiful and disturbing all at once.
The fact that these foods are so large makes you feel as if youâre a part of the installation. The scale of an oversized sandwich makes a human being become rat-sized, and lets you think about whatâs being discarded so freely onto the street. Have we all become literal pizza-rats?
