Don’t Be Afraid of Disney’s MALEFICENT Trailer

A lot of iconic “Sleeping Beauty” inspired shots, a ton of thorny-vines, a few brief glimpses at the dark one, and that’s what you get in Disney’s Maleficent teaser trailer.

There isn’t a lot here to indicate whether or not this movie will be any good, but we know one thing for certain: Angelina Jolie has aged very, very well. The other thing we know for certain is that the great and awesome Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series) is credited as one of the scriptwriters, along with Linda Woolverton, who has an impressive collection of animation credits on her IMDB page. The director, Robert Stromberg, comes from a visual effects background, which means the movie will look great but that’s about all it guarantees.

Disney describes the film this way: “A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.”

Aside from Jolie, the film also stars Elle Fanning as Aurora (Sleeping Beauty for those still unaware of the characters actual name), Peter Capaldi (the new Doctor Who. C’mon, people… try and keep up) as the King, and Shartlo Copley as someone called Stefan who we can only assume is a handsome prince and NOT a big-screen version of this guy.

Maleficent will be in theaters May 30, 2014.
