Donald Glover Takes Us to ATLANTA In A New FX Pilot!

Oh Donald Glover, your EGOT is so waiting for you… The multi-talented (as in writer-producer-comedian-rapper) is no doubt having a very joyous holiday season, since FX has just given a pilot order to Atlanta, a sitcom he’s been developing for over a year. Glover will executive produce the show, and play “one half of the central duo: two cousins, with wildly different takes on life, navigating the Atlanta rap scene.” Glover’s character is “Earnest ‘Earn’ Marks, a college drop-out who taps into his own musical aspirations when his estranged family member finds sudden fame.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, FX Networks and FX Productions president of original programming Nick Grad made the announcement, and rightly observed that “Donald Glover is a uniquely talented actor and performer who brings real-life experience to this subject matter… Not only is Donald a very gifted actor, he has achieved tremendous success and acclaim as the musical artist Childish Gambino. He, along with Paul Simms, has a very honest, sometimes serious, and funny perspective on life, the world of rap music and the city of Atlanta.”

Glover, a native of Stone Mountain, Georgia, is working on Atlanta with Girls and Flight of the Conchords writer Simms. Meanwhile, Childish Gambino’s Because the Internet is currently nominated for a Grammy (in the Best Rap Album category), and Glover has roles in three high-profile upcoming movies: the thriller The Lazarus Effect, Magic Mike XXL (with Channing Tatum reprising his role from the original film), and Ridley Scott’s next sci-fi project, The Martian (with Matt Damon). Glover’s also providing the voice for Miles Morales in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors. The character was inspired by the online campaign to see him play Spidey in Marc Webb’s film series. But with the future of that series in doubt and new rumors circulating that the character could possibly move to Marvel Studios, if only for a guest appearance in an Avengers movie, is it beyond the realm of possibility that Glover’s Spidey sense could yet tingle?
