DOCTOR WHO’s 50th Gets a Title and a Poster

Day Doc 2

Now THIS is something I want on my wall. Just a moment ago, at midnight in the UK, the BBC announced both the name of and the poster for the reportedly 75-minute Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special to air on channels everywhere on November 23rd, 2013. We had “The Name of the Doctor,” so now it’s time for “The Day of the Doctor,” a title that hearkens back to the 1972 story, “Day of the Daleks,” if you’re a super nerd like me. The poster for the special is nothing short of awesome, as it depicts the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors back-to-back whilst lots of things explode behind the Not-Doctor, John Hurt. See for yourself.

Day of the Doctor

From the official BBC America press release, we have the following:

The centerpiece of BBC AMERICA’s celebrations of Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary will be the special anniversary episode, The Day of the Doctor, premiering on Saturday, November 23. In addition to the episode title and iconic image revealed today, the BBC confirmed the anniversary special will be feature length with 75 minutes of adventure. The Day of the Doctor stars Matt Smith (How to Catch a Monster), David Tennant (Broadchurch), Jenna Coleman (Dancing on the Edge), with Billie Piper (Secret Diary of a Call Girl) and John Hurt (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Alien). This is the first time David Tennant and Billie Piper have appeared in the series since their farewells in 2010. The special will be a celebration for long-time fans and an opportunity for those new to the series to jump onboard.

Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor, said: “The Day of the Doctor is nearly here! Hope you all enjoy. There’s lots more coming your way, as the countdown to the 50th begins now.”

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, Doctor Who said: “50 years has turned Doctor Who from a television show into a cultural landmark. Personally I can’t wait to see what it becomes after a hundred.”

BBC AMERICA will announce additional 50th Anniversary programming plans in the coming weeks.

So, how excited are you by this?! I, for one, am “quite.” Let’s start talking about stuff in the comments below.

  1. Kurt says:

    Starting on October 5th.
    50 Days of the Doctor.
Watch a Doctor Who episode every day for 49 days. On the 50th day, watch The Day of the Doctor

  2. Frank says:

    Hello, new Android wallpaper.

  3. A friend just pointed this out to me… Hurt’s screwdriver is set to red.

  4. Nick says:

No please, it can’t be Ten Too. He’s too busy snoggin’ Rose in the alternate dimension. I’d gladly take Paul McGann’s militant Eight. Who’s to say John Hurt isn’t Eight time-locked?

In all seriousness, the “multiple Doctors thing”, (respect the thing!) has been done so many times in the Classic series that I was surprised it hasn’t happened earlier in the Nu-Who era.

  5. John says:

    AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is looking good and I’m pleased to hear that its going to be extra long. Sign me up for one of those posters as well. I’m pretty sure we’re going to finally cover the Time War in some fashion. Wonder how Moffat is going to treat it since it was an RTD idea. I do hope that he builds on things we’ve seen throughout the series like the TARDIS exploding.

I see a couple people wanting Doctor 10.5, I vote no on that one. The series has messed with time before so have it be Ten and Rose from their time.

Anyway now we really need a trailer BBC, I mean its September already and nothing?

  6. luke6stars says:

just please be the human-doctor version of tennant. l’ve never really been on board with the whole multiple doctors at the same time thing. Also, it will make for a more interesting character for tennant to play; the impossibly intelligent man who dances with eternity, now having to operate within the confines of mortality….just saying, that’s what i’d like to see. I know many of you will disagree…

  7. Marielle says:

I’m beyond thrilled. Also, the Day of the Doctor is my birthday…so…triple thrilled explains it.

  8. David Giles says:

People keep forgetting there is another Doctor out there, the Doctor who stayed with Rose after the Doctor/Donna. Who’s to say John Hurt isn’t that Doctor. Remember, he was born in battle, tried to commit genocide and an alternate scene was the 10th tossing him a piece of the TARDIS to grow his own.

  9. Orit says:

    Ahhhh… Can’t wait to see this…
    Brain can’t handle… Too much awesomeness…
I also can’t wrap my brain around Peter Capaldi being the new doctor, so I’ve basically convinced myself that he’s going to play the Valeyard one of the evil versions of the doctor (typecasting in my head…) also I couldn’t remember the evil doctor’s name was Valeyard so I went to wiki and found out by chance that Eric Roberts played The Master. What!!!???… There should be a south park episode for whovians because my brain can’t handle this anymore…

  10. James says:

Hoping they bring up the regenerations from McGann to Hurt and from Hurt to Eccelston.

Even if they don’t, it will be epic! What more could we fans ask for? The Time War, and the Moment, and Daleks! Oh, my!

(And no, I’m not Takei posting incognito)

  11. Devin says:

Is it just me or is Tennant’s hairdo looking a little wilted? Not that it will effect how awesome this will be.

  12. Amber says:

I see Daleks and the front door of the TARDIS as well. Maybe this is the point in time when the TARDIS explodes and will be explained back from series 5.

  13. mechas8n says:

Aw crap! It says BAD WOLF…THIS DOES NOT BODE WELL!

  14. Beth Rodgers says:

    I see Bad Wolf!!

  15. Until today I did not think it was possible to get goosebumps from a poster…

  16. Gaby A. says:

And that’s it.. Still no damn trailer.

  17. Sweet mother of awesome! Ever since hearing about the 50th episode, i have been waiting in anticipation. Waiting for awesomeness to show itself. Even the fan made trailers were sending chills down my spine and this poster is doing the same thing. I absolutely cannot wait for the The Day of the Doctor. I have no doubt that it will be nothing short of epic. 🙂
