It’s been far too long since we’ve had a new Doctor Who adventure on TV, and in just a few weeks, Peter Capaldi‘s Twelfth Doctor will be back in the new Doctor Who Christmas special, The Return of Doctor Mysterio. Today, BBC released a new trailer for the special, which offers up a look at this year’s villains and the Ghost (Justin Chatwin), a young man who may be the first superhero in the Whoniverse!
While we’re waiting for Pearl Mackie‘s Bill to make her series debut as the newest companion next year, The Return of Doctor Mysterio is reintroducing Nardole, Matt Lucas‘ character from last year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, The Husbands of River Song. Considering that Nardole was last seen as a severed head in control of King Hydroflaxâs robot body, we’re curious about how he ended up in his original form. We’re also wondering why the Doctor is traveling with Nardole, who seems very cheerful about their new adventure.
The trailer also lightly touches upon Lucy Fletcher (Charity Wakefield), a very Lois Lane-like investigative reporter who finds herself drawn to the Ghost while she and the Doctor separately investigate an apparent invasion of brain-swapping aliens. Adetomiwa Edun also makes a brief appearance in the clip as Mr. Brock, the human face behind the invasion. When Brock says, “We’re here to open your minds,” he may mean that literally.
Doctor Who: The Return of Doctor Mysterio will air on BBC One and BBC America on Christmas day, and it will even be shown in select North American theaters on December 27 and 29.
