DOCTOR WHO Spin-Off Class Has a Premiere Date, Timey-Wimey Guest Star

If you ask us, there can never be too many adventures in the Doctor Who universe (“Whoniverse” if you’re nasty). It’s been almost a full year since any new stories featuring Peter Capaldi‘s Twelfth Doctor aired and many a year has passed since the last time we saw any of that first Who spin-off, Torchwood. What’s a fan to do! Well, luckily, we know the young adult-aimed spin-off Class is heading our way soon, and Friday saw a huge amount of news announced about the ultra hush-hush series, including that one TARDIS-traveling Time Lord will appear in the premiere episode.

In the wee small hours of Friday morning here in the United States—but practically the end of the day in the UK—the cast of Class held a Facebook Live Q&A where many new pieces of information were dolled out. First and foremost, that the BBC Three drama will have its premiere Saturday October 22. (No word yet on a BBC America airing, but a tweet from the cable company intimated that it would air in 2017 along with the premiere of Doctor Who series 10.) It was also announced that Peter Capaldi himself will guest star in the first episode, a great way to get the ball rolling, as it were.

Of the spin-off series, Capaldi was quoted as saying, “The Doctor Who family is growing, and it’s fantastic to be able to welcome the young new cast of Class in to the Whoniverse.”

The first two episode titles were also revealed for the Patrick Ness-scripted show. The first is the ominous-sounding “For Tonight We Might Die,” and the second “The Coach with the Dragon Tattoo.” The series has been described as sort of a Buffy-esque teen adventure/horror/sci-fi drama with aliens, and Coal Hill School as the focal point.

The official synopsis is as follows:

Charlie (Greg Austin), April (Sophie Hopkins), Ram (Fady Elsayed) and Tanya (Vivian Oparah), assisted by their physics teacher Miss Quill (Katherine Kelly), are charged with a great responsibility by the mysterious alien known as the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) to guard against the creatures of nightmare that want nothing more than to find a way through to Earth and take it for their own.

Co-star Gregory Austin tweeted the following image of himself and Capaldi, obviously one of the more secretive things from the production:

While I’m a bit bummed we won’t get it to see Class on BBC America prior to next spring (Sidebar: yes, I’m not dumb, I know there are ways to watch it before then), the notion of having a new series in the universe is especially exciting given the dearth of any new episodes this year. And to have the Doctor himself appear in the first episode really lends some credibility to the whole endeavor. Hell, the Doctor never showed up on Torchwood!
