DOCTOR WHO Set Coming to LEGO Later This Year

It’s enough to make any would-be Time Lord do a form of the Snoopy dance. This morning, LEGO released their latest video detailing what fan-designed set or sets would be released as an Idea set later this year. These designs had to reach 10,000 supporters within a three-month time frame. As it turns out, two sets were announced, one from the latest batch of entries and one from the last go-round that was still under review. The new set will be Disney/Pixar’s Wall-E, and the holdover is…. a Doctor Who set!

Once the license for Doctor Who became available for LEGO a couple of years ago (before that, the BBC’s flagship program was under contract with a lesser company called Character Building), many fans had submitted ideas for possible sets. In the last announcement of winners, which saw of all things a Big Bang Theory set winning, it was also announced that the two Doctor Who sets would have further review. At the end of this video, the LEGO engineer (all of whom have delightful Scandinavian accents) announced that Andy Clark’s design, called “Doctor Who and Companions” would get to be made, likely after negotiations with the Beeb itself.

Here’s a look at his winning design, which is NOT what the final product will look like.

Now, I can’t imagine BBC Worldwide would allow the very first LEGO set to not include the current Doctor and companion, in this case Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, because synergy is everything. SO, as cool as LEGO Tennant and Rose looks, I doubt they’ll be included in the first batch. If more sets get made, then sure, but not until then. I’d bet my sonic screwdriver on it. I also doubt K-9 will be included for other licensing concerns, but if we get Dalek, Cyberman, Weeping Angel, and a TARDIS, I can’t see many Whovians being too upset.

The other winner, a set of the titular robot Wall-E, was designed by Angus MacLane, who actually works for Disney Pixar as an animator and who worked on the original film back in 2008. His design is also not the final product, but it looks pretty darn cool as well.

Details for both sets will be forthcoming, but both will be released for us to buy and have and build and love and display later this year. Below, here’s the actual announcement video. And let us know what you think of this news about two awesome new LEGO sets in the comments!
