It’s time to head back for thirds, Who-fans (who may or may not enjoy being called Whovians)! After doing great business at two previous special events in movie theaters, Doctor Who will be returning to cinemas in September to get people excited for Series 9, as if we weren’t excited already. After setting global box office records in 2013 with “The Day of the Doctor” in 3D, and then doing all right by showing “Deep Breath” in 2014, the BBC is hoping to hit pay dirt yet again with its screening of the Series 8 finale in 3D.
On September 15th and 16th at 7:30pm local time (wherever is local for you), the 700 participating cinemas will be screening both “Dark Water” and “Death in Heaven,” the explosive and rather heartbreaking conclusion to Peter Capaldi’s first series as the Doctor which had Missy and the Cybermen unleash a devastating plot to take over not only the world but the universe, using an army of the dead. Those episodes were both written by Steven Moffat and directed by Rachel Talalay, who will return to Who to direct the two-part finale of Series 9 as well.
On top of showing both of these excellent episodes, as an added bonus, they will be presented in RealD⢠3D and Dolby Atmos sound (where available); an army of zombie Cybermen in three dimensions…yeesh, that’s pretty darn creepy. And the look of the Nethersphere will probably be really awesome in the format, too. On top of that, the real treat will be the extras; “The Doctor’s Meditation,” a never-before-seen prequel to the upcoming Series 9 premiere, “The Magician’s Apprentice,” as well as exclusive interviews with Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman hosted by our friend and yours, Wil Wheaton.
Tickets will be available from Fathom Events beginning Friday, July 31st.
I’ll be there…will YOU?!
